The holiday season is fast approaching and with it comes the question that most people working in an office ask themselves; should you give coworkers presents? A Christmas gift to the people you work with? The answer to this question isn’t a simple one at all. It depends on a number of factors. Let’s take a look at why and why not you should buy a co-worker Christmas gift this year.

They’re Your Friends

The most obvious reason to buy your co-workers presents is that you genuinely consider them your friends. Not everyone you work with will be someone you consider a friend though. You may wish to put together a list of the people at work that you’ll be buying presents for. Just make sure that you don’t make others feel left out. Give coworkers presents privately when you can.

It Can Be Expensive

The downside of buying presents for the people you work with is that those expenses quickly pile up. Before you know it you’ve spent a few hundred dollars. You want to make sure that you buy a cheap but sweet gift that lets the person know that you value them. The good news is that there are plenty of cheap presents out there.  Give coworkers presents that are inexpensive and meaningful. Or you can also start office Christmas traditions, instead of gift giving.

It Can be Awkward

Another reason to consider avoiding gift giving is that it can get awkward. We already mentioned how awkward it is to be the one person not getting any presents, but think about what it would be like to find out someone spent more on you than you did on them? That’s why it’s a good practice to set a spending limit on this kind of thing. It’s also awkward to give presents to people you don’t know that well. It makes buying presents tough and giving them even tougher.

It’s the Right Thing to Do

Ultimately giving presents to your co-workers is just the right thing to do. You would buy presents for any of your friends, so why not buy them for the people that you work with? It feels good to get a present and it feels even better to be the one giving the gift. Tis the season for giving after all. The look on someone’s face as you hand them their co-worker Christmas gift is priceless and it makes you feel great. They know that you value them enough to give them something.

Why give coworkers presents?

At the end of the day whether you give a gift to your co-workers or not is a personal choice. No one can force you to give out presents if you don’t want to. Think about how you’ll go about it; who will you give presents to? How much will you spend? There’s good and bad to giving presents to coworkers, but you could say the same of anything else in life. The good feeling that you get when you give a gift is worth it though. And if there is ever a good time for gift-giving, it is during the holiday.
